Doublefaced by Sebastian Bieniek is a series of 12 experimental portraits. The prime theme of this project is that a second (or sometimes even third), rudimentary face is painted with makeup (what appears to be just lipstick and eyeliner) on the side of his subjects face, while her actual facial features are covered up with a range of different props.

Basic surrealism with a touch of Picasso thrown in, Bieniek captures his character in what seems to be a daily routine....While the idea seems so simple, the results are unnerving.

I would refer to the execution of the shoots as crude, but I really don't think it could have been done any other way. If Bieniek chose instead to approach the series with a big beauty dish and attitude that the photographs needed to look traditionally beautiful the message of the pieces would be lost. The eerie nature of the photographs is what makes them remarkable.

The clumsiness of the make-up is also (whether intentional or not) cleaver. Even though the makeup looks so obviously drawn on the subjects face, the mind is still tricked into forgetting that there is a human underneath the painting - until you stumble on the real eye (and get a bit creeped out).
