I saw an exhibition of Richard Avedon's works in mid 2013 - it was mind blowing. Some of my most favourite public figures were photographed by Avedon with a new depth that was rarely displayed or displayed by these people. Allen Ginsberg and lifelong partner Peter Orlovsky, Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller, Andy Warhol and the Factory group, Bob Dylan, Louis Armstrong - all photographed with a remarkable 'real' presence. In the later context of Marilyn Monroe's fate, his image of her in what seems to be a deep reflection with an undertone of melancholy was very touching. Monroe was rarely depicted out of her mask of glamour, sensuality and general label of perfection. Avedon obviously created a moment with Monroe that scraped the surface of her humanity.

My favourite shoot by Avedon is of Ginsberg and Orlosvsky intertwined beautifully, naked, comfortable, casual and captured in play.

Dovima in her perfect Dior gown with the elephants is a testament to Avedon's photography prowess. It has been the inspiration for generations of photographers to come and is a classic in the industry.
