Sanja Ivekovic is a
multi-media artist with interests in photography, sculpture and visual
installation. As one of the most appreciated contemporary
European artists (Sanja Ivekovic is based in Zagreb, Croatia), her work has
been hugely influential throughout many creative industries.
Being an artist, most of
her photography showcases a very conceptual approach. Ivekovic developed
a fondness and a deep interest towards the traits of the human face,
particularly of the female face. Most of her photographs could be even
interpreted as criticism towards the modern trends to over edit portraits
through digital manipulation (think Photoshop).
One of her most famous
photographic installations, "Sweet Violence" portrays women, mostly
in black and white, with markers, pins, scissors and other elements on their
faces, almost as if those were the notes of an architect or an engineer. These
iconic images manage to appear very ambiguous, yet very eloquent and clear at
the same time; not approaching the viewer as a bold statement, but as
"food for thought", as a way to open a discussion and deal with ideas
and concept.
As an artist, Sanja Ivekovic seems to be much
more interested in the metaphysical and conceptual aspects of her work rather
than on the sheer aesthetics of it; although it is by way of the aesthetic
component of her photography that she manages to give meaning to her work.
