Craig McDean is a really inspirational figure to me. I really love his story about making it in the photography world through his determination and style. McDean originally had a failed career in motorcross pro riding and decided to turn his focus to photography, studying on a full time basis. Eventually he ended up dropping out his course due to his incapability to get along with any of his lecturers and his next move was to track down Nick Knight and accompany his shoots. Knight eventually hired McDean as his assistant because "he was more David Bowie than Bowie". I find it really uplifting to see people who follow their dreams with integrity and drive and then to see them succeed.
McDeans has developed a really beautiful style that is always striking. There is so much attitude that drives his works to new levels. My most loved work of McDean's is his representation of Jack White. I really feel like he knew Jack White's style almost better than White did himself and then recreated it in a beautifully done shoot. So I guess you could say McDean's strength is understanding iconic styles better than what the faces of the style do themselves.
