Andy Hatton’s life and his footage
have an interesting story to tell. As an English Speech-Language
Pathologist, he found his new home in Australia, Melbourne where he does most
of his work but he is also willing do so some footage overseas, where he can
capture moments and make them everlasting.
He is still relatively known as a
newcomer (as he has been on the scene for no more than 4 years) but has been
working hard to put himself on the map. With becoming one of the Capture
Magazines top Advertising Photographers in the Australian Emerging Photographer
of the Year Awards in 2011.
Hatton says the key to making it as a
professional photographer is being versatile. Even though he loves capturing
everyday moments and making them special he has done work in almost every
field; all from fashion, sports, advertising to live music events. He claims
that when your work is versatile you do not limit yourself to the expectations
you think you can reach. You give yourself a chance of growing and open up a
range of various opportunities that will benefit you in your future.
Another important fact he has
learnt in his few years of professional work is that you can never have too
much footage. When your options are limited, and you have a little footage it
makes you're editing so much more challenging. Some moments you should have
captured are missing, and the story gets cut in many possible ways, so it loses
its fluidity. The part he enjoys doing after all the action he has done on the
field it's telling us a story that connects the footage he has done and tries
to find the links between the scenes and clips of his photographs or videos. A
strong desire he has is to show us that editing these scenes with some
connection; what is the flow between them is where the real magic lies, and you
have to do you're best to get your viewers engaged in the moments so they will
always be coming back for more.
For me, the interesting fact is also that he does not own all of the equipment necessary for his work. As he does not want to spend thousands of dollars on the gear, so he rents most of it, but emphasizes that lighting kit is always mandatory.
