PHOTOGRAPHER #13.

Rena Effendi is quite obviously a natural observer of humans (something I suspect her entomologist father may have influenced). Effendi often seems to be striving to reach the core of the natural human condition by exploring what is common in all of us - highlighting not only the injustices this world harbours but also the positivities.
Effendi brings an element of beauty and artistry to photo journalism, which for the most part has a much greater emotional impact on the viewer (rather than the traditional documentary style of photography). The social commentary through out her pieces are bold and unavoidable. Effendi's talent for forcing her audience to pay attention to their privileges has the power to stir anyones inner activist.
Rena Effendi portrays the true essence of life prevailing in some of the most unsavoury environments. Images depicting children playing in a wasteland are both disturbing and (what seems like in the moment) fantastical.
The innocent charm displayed in the photographs are touching. The playful atmosphere of the pieces demonstrate that no matter what oppression, disadvantage or injustice is thrown our way, true human spirit and kinship will surface.
This is in no way to say that we should become complacent or unattached to the gravity of the situation these people have to live with - but it shows just how inspiring we can be as a species.
