Nick Knight- one of the most renown figures in fashion over the past few decades . Knight seems to have mastered a complete understanding of the female form, fashion and design. Knight's innovation and commitment to creativity is truly admirable (if you ever get the chance to watch some of his behind the scenes videos it will blow your mind). I feel that he is not only is able to keep up with the the turn arounds in couture fashion each season but he then brings new life, movement at atmosphere to the pieces through deep understanding of each design house and what they represent.
Knight is also a remarkable businessman, building the SHOWstudio.com empire. This was really the first innovation to seriously consider how fashion photography would be shaped and expanded by the internet. SHOWstudio has become a modern reference point for many of the most innovative ideas and experiences of fashion and fashion photography today.
I think that is where the difference in success lies. I am coming to understand that raw talent is only going to get you so far in any creative industry. Unless you obtain the necessary business skills it's going to be tough to pay your bills…let alone create an empire of your own.
I believe it was Neil Gaiman who put it best with his notion in his now famous Make Good Art speech that to make it in the creative world you have to:
1. Produce great work
2. Deliver the work in a timely manner
3. Be a great person to do business with
He then goes on to say that you only need to master two out of these three to make a living - but seriously, who wants to only give 66% percent? ;)
