Although she was born in Israel, Michelle
Frankfurter works and lives in the United States. Overtime, she set out to
develop a very peculiar style of photography, with a fondness for black and
white image with a vintage feel.
Her photographs are usually more oriented
towards the individual; the subject's human qualities and meaning. This type of
approach is actually a great fit with Michelle's photojournalism attitude and a
great compromise between storytelling through images and strong aesthetic
qualities.
Some of her photos have been featured within
international media outlets the likes of Reuters, with a major coverage all
over the world.
Her "Destino" collection strikes for a minimal approach. The black and white images portray subjects living on the fringes, religious
iconography and urban wasteland. The feel of her photographs is not much about
social criticism. In fact, it almost feels like she is offering a “romantic” portrait of
these people, living so far from the social conventions of the western world,
so much that what they do in the photographs almost feels like an adventure to
the viewer (jumping trains, venturing out in the wild, finding shelter
somewhere…)
“Destino” is a great portrayal of how our lifestyles greatly differ
on this planet, and Michelle’s simple, clean and minimal style just feels like
the best possible compromise to paint this picture. Realism masked as
surrealism!
