As a photographer, Lee Jeffries has set out to focus mostly on portraits, with a
fondness for black and white images with a gritty feel. He plays a lot with
contrasts, highlighting the dualism of dark and light within his pictures, to
the point that the stylistic choice could almost be interpreted as a symbolic
choice. Light plays 2 different roles within his images: either it hides
everything, covering the subject in a shade of mystery and uncertainty, or it
actually does a great job highlighting some details: a certain look, a piece of
clothing, a forehead marked by age and heavy work.
Jeffries manages to take photos of real subject with a very surrealistic and
almost unnatural vibe. The portraits can almost appear dreamy or
caricature-like at times, because of certain angles used to emphasise some
specific anatomic characteristics within an individual. He is particularly
known for portraits of older people, almost as if his work was the
representation of an older generation, an older outlook on life that still
holds on to its latest witnesses.
He
is very well known for his portraits of homeless people. These works are
fascinating and eloquent, depicting these individuals with a certain component
of romance and pride, as if he wanted to highlight a certain nobility to their
lives, something that goes far behind wearing rags and living in the streets.
